A CT Traffic Signal Technician Certificate Program Level I Required Workshop
Course Description:
This workshop is designed to provide an overview of how traffic signals operate and how to locate construction and operational information, such as phasing and timings, on a traffic signal plan. This hands-on workshop will include a walk-through of the various components of a traffic signal plan. We will discuss the process for documenting changes to the traffic signal timings and/or infrastructure. Participants will also learn about the various warrants to justify the installation of a traffic signal and other information, including phasing, contained in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will:
- Understand basic signal timing and phasing concepts.
- Understand the purpose of a traffic signal and the warrants, including MUTCD warrants, for installing a signal.
- Understand the principles of traffic signal operations.
- Identify the physical infrastructure on a traffic signal plan and obtain signal timings and operational information from a traffic signal plan.
- Discuss the process for documenting signal plan changes.

Class Notes:
Completion of pre-class work is required before taking this course. This self-paced learning module will be sent to you ahead of time, serves as a prerequisite for the Engineering Concepts/Signal Plan Reading class, and must be completed beforehand. Upon completion, you’ll also earn one hour of Traffic Signal Academy credit toward your Signal Champion designation.
