Road Master Program

The Connecticut Road Master Program is a series of workshops designed to provide Connecticut's municipal highway personnel with knowledge of the fundamentals of modern road maintenance management procedures and techniques.

The program will be of interest to municipal road maintenance supervisors at all levels and those who may assume supervisory positions in the future.  

Why offer a Connecticut Road Master Program?

A properly maintained local road system is vital to the social, economic and environmental well-being of Connecticut's municipalities. In addition, the local road system represents a significant investment of public funds. Protecting and preserving this investment requires a force of municipal personnel with sound training in the fundamentals of road maintenance management procedures and techniques. The Connecticut Road Master Program provides an opportunity for municipal road maintenance personnel to receive this specialized training. 

Program Certificate and Requirements

Those who complete the program will be awarded the Connecticut Road Master Certificate. The certificate is recognition of a participant's successful completion of the program and attests to his or her knowledge of the fundamentals of modern road management procedures and maintenance techniques. 

The Connecticut Road Master Certificate will be awarded upon completion of at least nine workshops (7 required and 2 electives). Workshops are scheduled to allow completion of the requirement within two years if desired.

Participants who attended any of the program's seven required or two elective workshops since January 1, 1990, will receive credit towards certification.

Upon successful completion of the Road Master Program, graduates who are pursuing or are currently in supervisory positions may enroll in the advanced Road Scholar Program.

Program Details:

As outlined below, you will need 7 required workshops and 2 elective workshops to complete the program and receive a certificate.

Seven (7) Required Workshops:

  • Basics of a Good Road
  • All About Asphalt Pavements
  • Principles of Drainage for Local Roads
  • On-the-Job Safety and OSHA Regulation for Local Road Personnel
  • Work Zone Safety for Maintenance Operations on Local Roads
  • Planning and Managing Local Road Snow and Ice Control Activities
  • Effective Communication Skills*

Two (2) Elective Workshops:

You may choose two (2) workshops from any of the Road Master elective workshops being offered during the time you are participating in the Road Master Program.

Some examples of elective topics include:

  • Construction Math and Plan Reading;
  • ATSSA Flagger Certification;
  • Backhoe Safety and Operations;
  • Surveying Methods for Local Roads;
  • Maintenance of Gravel Roads
  • Defensive Driving for Public Works

*Classes are $100 per participant for state and local employees, unless otherwise noted.
