Public Works Academy

The Connecticut Public Works Academy is an introductory level training program for those public works staff that are new to public works and road maintenance. It is also an excellent opportunity to provide updated information on the latest in best practice and technologies to those employees new to professional development.

The program is comprised of a series of six (6) weekly sessions aimed at providing education on those core competencies necessary to be a successful public works professional. These sessions cover the following topics:

  • Professionalism and Communication Skills
  • Operational Safety
  • Work Zone Safety and Flagger Certification (4-Year ATSSA)
  • Roadway Fundamentals
  • Chainsaw Safety and Storm Clean Up
  • Winter Operations and Safe Snowplowing

Participants are required to complete all six (6) sessions in order to complete the Academy.

*The Academy is $400 per participant, for the series.

A group of public works professionals sits around a classroom table engaged in a hands-on training activity. Several men in high-visibility shirts and work uniforms are focused on a tabletop work zone simulation board covered with roadway diagrams, small traffic control pieces, and labeled cards. One participant points to the board while another observes closely, and others discuss strategies. Additional participants are seated at nearby tables, also working on similar activities. The room has whiteboards and windows in the background.
