A Connecticut Safety Academy Workshop
Class Description:
This workshop is geared to municipal staff responsible for the placement, maintenance, and management of traffic signs, pavement markings and their associated inventories. The course will include examples of proper sign installation practices, roadway safety materials and inspection methods of retro-reflectivity properties. Attendees will learn about the evolution of pavement markings, MUTCD requirements, science behind the optics, as well as the different types of pavement markings, and how to inspect them. The class includes a field exercise that will allow participants to put into practice what is learned during the classroom portion of the workshop.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this class, participants will know:
- Federal and state requirements for signs.
- The importance of a sign inventory and maintenance program.
- The types of signs and sign materials that are available.
- Strategies for proper sign placement and installation techniques.
- How pavement markings work and why the traveling public needs them.
- Inspection of pavement markings.
- Types of pavement markings and their “optic” packages.
Who Should Attend:
- Public Works Directors and Supervisors
- Public Works Foremen
- Maintenance staff

Jason Hughes and Shawn Barry are Safety Technical Associates at the University of Connecticut's Training and Technical Assistance Center.

- Cost: Free. No registration fee is charged for this class. This training opportunity is offered by the Training & Technical Assistance Center's Connecticut Safety Academy.
- If a participant fails to attend the workshop and does not inform our team by phone or email by the morning of the training, a $25.00 no-show fee will be charged. Alternatively, you may send a replacement from your agency.
- Lunch will be provided.
- Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
- Approximately one week prior to the class, you will receive an email confirmation of your attendance, along with the address of the workshop location.
