A Connecticut Safety Academy Workshop 

Class Description:

Intersections are critical for providing access and connectivity to local and regional destinations for all roadway users. This course will provide information on the state of the practice of innovative intersection planning and design to implement solutions toward the goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries, while also improving mobility for bicyclists and pedestrians. 

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key design, operational, and principal features of the innovative geometric designs presented. 
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of their use. 
  • Assess what innovative designs are applicable for a location given conditions and constraints.
  • Identify available resources for information on the covered designs and implementations.

Instructors:

Elliott Moore, P.E., Elliott is in a hybrid position at FHWA collaborating closely between the Resource Center and the Office of Safety on efforts to advance the goal of getting to zero fatalities and serious injury crashes on the nation’s roadways. He specializes in intersection and interchange design, preventing roadway departure fatalities, and is providing technical assistance on the Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative (SS4A). Elliott currently resides in Richmond, VA with his wife, two small children, and their extremely misbehaved puppy.

Mark Doctor, P.E., has served in his current position with the FHWA Resource Center Safety and Design Team since 2005, providing technical assistance and training to advance the application of innovative and performance-based safety and design practices on a national level. Mark provides technical services in the areas of geometric design, intersection safety, innovative intersections, freeway interchange design, and the Safe System approach.
