Course Description:

This course provides participants with the tools and knowledge to help understand the Safe System Approach (SSA) as it relates to specific low-cost safety improvements (LCSI). These low-cost and ready to use improvements, that enhance the safety of roads and highways, and various data sources used to evaluate safety will be discussed. Countermeasures for specific areas including roadway segments and curves, roadsides, unsignalized intersections, and signalized intersections will also be covered.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the Safe System Approach (SSA) philosophy, goals, components, and methods.
  • Be able to relate SSA to LCSI programs by examining intended vs unintended consequences of safety countermeasures.
  • Be able to describe/discuss some potential LCSIs for:
    - Roadway segments & curves
    - Roadsides
    - Unsignalized intersections
    - Signalized intersections

Who Should Attend:

This class is designed for local transportation or public safety professionals involved in making decisions regarding road safety.

Traffic and Safety Engineers, Public Works Directors, Highway Supervisors, Local Traffic Authorities (LTAs) and Law Enforcement personnel are encouraged to attend.
