Combating Rural Roadway Departures

Course Description:

Thirty people in the United States will die today as a result of a roadway departure on a rural road. This workshop will provide participants with information on countermeasures that can reduce the number and severity of these crashes. The workshop will also help participants understand the systemic approach to implementing these countermeasures.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the rural roadway departure crash problem 
  • Identify the three objectives used to combat the problem 
  • Identify proven safety countermeasures to mitigate roadway departures 
  • Recognize the crash reduction potential for the individual countermeasures 
  • Understand why the systemic approach is critical to reduce roadway departures

Who Should Attend:

This class is designed for any local or state transportation or public safety professionals involved in making decisions regarding the safety of their road systems. Engineers, Public Works Directors, Highway Supervisors, Planners, Legal Traffic Authorities (LTAs) and law enforcement personnel are encouraged to attend. Participants will receive 6 credit hours toward their CT Safety Champion designation.
