Dr. Norman W. Garrick Returns from Sabbatical

nwg_webcopy (30K)Dr. Norman W. Garrick recently returned from sabbatic leave in Jamaica. He was one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who traveled abroad for the 2004-5 AY through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Dr. Garrick lectured on urban planning in Jamaica in collaboration with researchers at the University of the West Indies (Mona). Of particular interest is the role of transportation in fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The research component of his work focused on public transportation in Kingston. He worked on documenting the process of collapse and recovery of the transit system as a case study in understanding the role of local government and the international lending agencies in promoting different transportation and land use strategies.


PhD. STUDENT WINS TRB's BEST PRESENTATION AWARD

jianhe (44K)CEE Graduate Assistant, Jianhe Du, was one of thirteen Ph.D. students to present their dissertation at a special seminar in the area of transportation planning at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting held in Washington, DC in January. Her presentation, entitled "Investigating Route Choice and Driver Behavior Using GPS-Collected Data," was judged best in terms of quality, clarity and conciseness. Jianhe will graduate from UConn this spring. Her advisor is Dr. Lisa Aultman-Hall. CONGRATULATIONS, Jianhe!


NEUTC Grant Awarded for Safety Town Loan Program

safety-town (38K)Safety Town for Children is an educational loan program available from the CT Technology Transfer Center (T2) at no charge to towns and schools in Connecticut. Safety Town is a hands-on display designed as a tool to teach children about transportation safety. The T2 center is in the process of completing curriculum development for this program, which is supported through an external grant. To learn more about the program, contact smerrall@engr.uconn.edu
