As Holiday Shopping Time Approaches...
Parking Demand Management Study Receives
Media Attention in Connecticut

parking (74K)Recent articles in area newspapers refer to a CTI-associated project with the headlines: "Study Says Too Many Parking Spots" and "Study: Excessive Parking a Downer for Shoppers." The study referred to in these articles was co-authored by Wesley Marshall, a transportation researcher and doctoral candidate in Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Dr. Norman W. Garrick, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UConn.

The 2-year study, which examined six new England shopping sites [downtown areas in West Hartford, Northhampton (MA) and Brattleboro (VT), and commercial sites in Glastonbury and Avon (CT)] found that "many shopping areas have more than twice the parking spaces they need - even during peak holiday shopping periods..." . The study discusses cost, quality of life and environmental issues associated with creating excessive parking space.

The newspaper articles, appearing in the November 26 issue of the Journal Inquirer and the November 28 issue of the Hartford Courant, cite findings of the study and present quotes by the authors. To read these articles, visit:
